Italian GP at Monza to be ‘Closed Event’
Monza confirm 2020 Italian GP will take place with no fans allowed.
Monza have confirmed that the 2020 Italian Grand Prix will be a ‘Closed Event’ with no fans in attendance.
Three rounds have so far taken place in the 2020 season, two at the Red Bull Ring and one at Hungary’s Hungaroring, all of which have been held with no fans present.
Next up is the British and 70th Anniversary GPs at Silverstone where the grandstands will also be empty.
That was also going to be the case throughout the summer, though there was hope amongst F1 officials that the Italian Grand Prix on September 6 could be the first race where a limited number of fans were allowed to attend a Formula 1 race again.
Sadly though that won’t be the case with the promoters of the Italian Grand Prix confirming that the race will be a ‘Closed Event’.
“The 2020 Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza from 4-6 September will take place behind closed doors, i.e. without spectators,” Monza’s statement reads.
“Tickets already purchased will be refunded for the full value of the face price shown on them.”
Fans may not have to wait much longer though to return to watching all the action live from the stands.
The Russian Grand Prix, which will happen three weeks after the Italian Grand Prix on September 27, are planning to have spectators at the race.
Tickets are on sale for the event and its promoters have already put their hopes of having an audience on record.
Russian GP organisers, Rosgonok, previously told Russian sports media outlet Championat: “We are determined to hold the Russian stage with an audience on the dates approved by the Formula 1 calendar, and continue to prepare for the seventh grand prix in the history of the country.
“If circumstances so require, they are technically ready for an alternative. In this case, the contractual obligations may be slightly different.
“At the moment, no such proposals have been received from Formula 1.”
Formula 1 officials are hoping to have tens-of-thousands of fans on-site for the Portuguese Grand Prix at Portimao, according to Autosport.com.
Portimao was an unscheduled addition to the calendar with the event taking place from October 23-25.
