Kimi Raikkonen conceded that Alfa Romeo simply weren’t quick enough after both cars missed out on the top 10 in qualifying for the Monaco GP.

The Finn will start from P14 in what will be his 300th Grand Prix weekend, just don’t mention it to him, while his team-mate Antonio Giovinazzi will line-up P18 after he received a three-place grid penalty for blocking Nico Hulkenberg.

“We weren’t fast enough for a better result. We didn’t have the grip to go faster, we tried many things,” Raikkonen told reporters in Monte Carlo.

“We still did our fastest times in qualifying, so nothing wrong, we just needed to be quicker.”

Giovinazzi believed the team had shown enough pace in free practice to get at least one car in the top 10, so saw failure to do so as a poor effort from Alfa.

“It’s really strange, we don’t know why [we had no pace], but we didn’t change anything in the car, in qualifying we didn’t find the grip,” he explained.

“We need some points, we were really looking forward to getting a car into Q3, so it’s really disappointing.”
