Alex Albon has revealed such is the bond between Max Verstappen and Gianpiero Lambiase that they barely have to say a word while chasing the perfect set-up.

Lambiase has been Verstappen’s race engineer ever since the Dutchman joined Red Bull as an 18-year-old in 2016.

Working together for the sixth season, they achieved the ultimate goal last term when Verstappen was crowned World Champion having beaten Lewis Hamilton on the final lap of the season.

Speaking to Ziggo Sport after his title triumph, the new World Champion said such is his relationship with Lambiase that if the race engineer leaves, he will follow him out of the door.

“I have said to him I only work with him. As soon as he stops, I stop too,” he said.

“Of course, we can be pretty strict with each other sometimes, but I want that too. He has to tell me when I’m being a jerk and I have to tell him. I always told him that.

“He can tell me that on the radio as well, but it’s been going really well lately. The last few years I tried to be the engineer and he tried to be the driver.”

Verstappen’s former team-mate at Red Bull, Albon, has shared a few more details about the Dutchman’s special bond with his engineer.

“That bond is impressive,” Albon told Formule 1 Magazine. “Max and Gianpiero rarely talk about details because they understand each other so well.

“During a race weekend, they don’t need to spend hours talking about car set-ups. Sometimes they even have the car in order after 10 or 15 minutes.”

Lambiase was the man on the mic when Verstappen made his Red Bull debut in early 2016, the driver winning the Spanish Grand Prix on his debut.

He has since gone on to increase his win tally to 20 grands prix, taking 60 podium finishes and claiming 13 pole positions.

And, of course, he now has a World title having won the 2021 Drivers’ Championship

Albon says he is impressed with how the 24-year-old goes about his business.

“He lets the driving speak for itself,” he said.

“It is mainly the confidence he has in his team. You notice this in the way he treats his engineer.

“Max focuses on driving and the people behind the scenes are busy with their duties.”

Verstappen would quit F1 on one condition

Max Verstappen has revealed that there is only one reason he would leave Formula One.
