Fernando Alonso is not interested in fighting for seventh place in the championship, saying his only goal is to keep McLaren ahead of Force India in the standings.
With four races remaining in this season, and in Alonso’s Formula 1 career, the Spaniard is 10th in the Drivers’ standings.
His 50 points puts him just three behind Sergio Perez, Kevin Magnussen and Nico Hulkenberg.
Perez currently holds down seventh place thanks to his third-placed finish at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
Alonso, though, says he has no interesting in fighting any of them for the ‘best of the rest’ tag.
“No not really,” he told RaceFans.net. “It means nothing to finish seventh in the championship. There is no point to have any plan for that.
“My only plan is to finish the Constructors’ Championship as high as possible with McLaren.
“We have now a strong position, we have maybe no hopes to catch Renault and Haas but the gap between us and Force India and Sauber is reducing every race because they are very strong now.
“And we will not let them catch us before Abu Dhabi. That’s my main focus.
“The Drivers’ Championship really I’m not interested.”
