Fernando Alonso will return to Formula 1 in 2020 but not with Ferrari, that’s the opinion of the Scuderia’s test driver Marc Gene.
Alonso walked away from Formula 1 at the end of last year but made it know that his days in motor racing’s premier class may not be over.
The Spaniard has instead focused his attention on the World Endurance Championship with Toyota while also chasing a first Indianapolis 500 victory with McLaren.
However, his recent announcement that he won’t continue in WEC has many wondering if he’ll be back in Formula 1 next season.
Gene, a long-serving Ferrari test driver, believes he will return.
“I think he will return, but it’s not possible with Ferrari,” Gene told AS newspaper.
“The fact that he did not renew with Toyota is a message that he wants to have freedom.
“But he will only return with a car that allows him to, if not win races then podiums.
“Right now there are three teams that allow this so we will see next year or end of this season.”
He added: “Fernando always has aces up his sleeve, we don’t even know he has them.”
