2020 pleased AlphaTauri more than year Vettel won

Franz Tost has compared the two seasons when AlphaTauri won F1 races – and thinks 2020 was better overall than 2008.

The Italy-based team have ironically achieved both of their grand prix wins in their home country at Monza, 12 years apart.

The first of those was courtesy of Sebastian Vettel on a rain-affected weekend, with the German driver also recording his maiden F1 success, while the second came via Pierre Gasly last year.

There was a difference between the two victories because Vettel was the class of the field all weekend, having won from pole position, whereas Gasly received a big helping hand when Lewis Hamilton incurred a penalty for entering the pit lane under red-flag conditions.

But looking at the bigger picture, AlphaTauri team principal Tost views 2020 as a more pleasing campaign for his team due to the consistently stronger results they produced.

“2008, yes it was a fantastic victory with Sebastian in Monza, but we didn’t have so many good finishes like last year,” Tost told Autosport.

“It wasn’t only the victory at Monza. There were many other good races we had with the fourth place at Imola [by Daniil Kvyat], the fifth place at Portimao.

“We were sixth in Bahrain and in Germany, seventh in Austria, Great Britain and Mugello.

“We didn’t have only one exciting race. We had a lot of very good race results and this put us plenty ahead of 2008.”

Tost also paid tribute to the way in which the AlphaTauri team at Faenza had united during 2020, as well as Gasly’s own step up in form across the season.

“In Faenza, the design team, production, worked really good and are coming together,” added Tost.

“We are getting stronger and stronger in every aspect from the processes, but also from the discipline side and also the track operations worked well. People are coming more and want to get up.

“We have two really good drivers [rookie Yuki Tsunoda has joined Gasly for 2021] as well. Pierre improved a lot. He has reached a real high level now. Therefore, we could be so successful.

“The car, I must say, worked from the very beginning onwards. The aerodynamic upgrades fortunately brought an advantage and put us forwards. These points together came up to a nice clear picture with success.”
