AlphaTauri have taken the covers off their AT03, sort of, following in Red Bull’s footsteps by revealing what is effectively an updated show car.

The Faenza-based team hosted a virtual launch for the car, which will be driven by Pierre Gasly and Yuki Tsunoda, the team retaining the same line up for a second successive season.

But while the drivers are the same, the car is most definitely not.

This year Formula 1 cars have been designed with a completely different philosophy to last season’s, the sport moving away from over-car airflow to ground effect aerodynamics.

The intent of the new regulations is to enable the cars to follow each other far more closely while also reducing overall costs by simplifying the designs.

AlphaTauri unveiled their interpretation of the new technical rules on Monday.

Sticking with their now traditional navy blue and white colours, the one most notable feature on the car is its aggressive undercut sidepod solution while AlphaTauri have also gone with square inlets like the Aston Martin.

As with yesteryear’s cars, the AT03 has Red Bull’s gearbox, rear suspension and hydraulics.

Team boss Franz Tost said: “I am excited to finally reveal what our 2022 Formula 1 car will look like.

“It is a completely new era for F1 and we hope that this package will be very strong, following last year’s success.

“Once again, we have worked closely with AlphaTauri to launch our new car and I think we’ve managed to deliver something very special.”

The new car will not be seen in public until next week’s first pre-season test at Barcelona in Spain.

Last season AlphaTauri finished sixth in the Constructors’ Championship, the team securing one podium finish with Gasly P2 at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

The Frenchman was one of the stars of the championship, even bagging his maiden front row grid slot, while his rookie team-mate Tsunoda impressed as often as he crashed.

He finished his debut season with a career best P4, a result that AlphaTauri hopes bodes well for the season to come.

The team has a new engine supplier this season, the AT03 will be powered by a Red Bull engine which is effectively a rebadged Honda unit.

Honda left Formula 1 last season but not before handing their engines over to Red Bull’s new powertrain division.

While the car no longer features Honda branding, it does sport the Honda Racing Corporation division logo.
