Alpine aim to ‘regularly’ fight for podiums

Alpine’s Davide Brivio says that while the team’s ultimate target is to win races, regularly fighting for podiums is the goal for 2021.
The team is entering a new era this season having ditched the Renault name and rebranded themselves as Alpine.
With stable regulations limiting the amount of work they can do on last season’s car, they’re expecting to be in the midfield battle again.
Having finished in the top three on three occasions in 2020 though, Brivio, who is the new Racing Director, says the target is to be in contention for podiums again, and more often.
“Of course we want to win, everybody in the team wants to win,” Brivio said as per Motorsport Week.
“We have to be realistic. Last year we did three podiums, so we started to get close to the top positions and that’s where we have to start from.
“First of all, we have to be fighting for the podium, hopefully regularly fighting for the podium, and then step-by-step go close to the best possible position.
“Of course the final target is to win. Probably we have a route to get there and achieve this target, but that’s what we have to do.”

With widespread regulations being introduced in 2022, many teams on the grid have already turned their attention to next year’s cars.
Fernando Alonso has previously stated how his main reason for rejoining the team was to get back to winning ways next year, and Brivio says that the team shares that ambition and is doing everything to make it a reality.
“This year is kind of a special year because everybody is looking towards 2022, the new regulations and new cars which are under development,” Brivio said.
“So this is a kind of preparation year where we hope in 2022 to improve even more our competitiveness, but the winning is always in our target.
“I’m sure our drivers first, they want to get there. So yes that’s the target, because you need to get the target, you need to have a dream, and then you need to work very hard to achieve it.”
While Alonso has admitted he’s thinking about 2022, he has said that at the moment his focus is entirely on his first year back on the grid.
