Having qualified inside the top ten for the first time this season, Antonio Giovinazzi’s says his number one target is keeping P10 at the start.

After that he’ll be looking to take his “chances” at the Monaco Grand Prix.

The Italian made Alfa Romeo’s first visit to Q3 on the streets of Monte Carlo on Saturday.

While he may have finished that session P10, it is nonetheless a good starting position as he looks to score his and the team’s first points of the season.

“Our goal is to do a good start,” he told Sky Italia, “we know that in Monaco it’s difficult to overtake. So we have to try to keep the position in the top ten after the first corner.

“And then take our chances with everybody.”

Although Alfa Romeo have shown small signs of improvement, the team has yet to put together a points-scoring weekend with Kimi Raikkonen losing his P9 at Imola for a restart infringement.

Giovinazzi was happy to give the team a performance that can motivate them.

“Yes, I’m happy, for the team in particular,” he said.

“We had a lot of bad luck in these first four races. And so this result is something that motivates the whole team.

“Now we’re in Q3, I’m a bit disappointed for the last lap in Q3. I had only one set of new tyres and with the red flag I didn’t manage to finish the lap.

“Maybe we could do better, but I’m happy anyway.”

“I believed also in something more,” he added, “because for all the weekend I was eight, ninth, always in the top ten. But it’s great like this.

“We can still take our chances.”

Raikkonen will start the grand prix from 14th place on the grid.
