It was a weekend to remember for Antonio Giovinazzi as he enjoyed his best result in F1, and to make things even more special, it came at his home grand prix.
Before Sunday, Giovinazzi’s previous best result in Formula 1 came at the Austrian GP this year when he finished P10.
“I think it was a great day, I think for Italy in general, with the Ferrari victory and my ninth place,” the 25-year-old said.
He added: “I have to say thanks to them because I had full support from Wednesday [at Ferrari’s 90th anniversary celebrations] in Milan until [Sunday], a lot of my friends and family were here. A great weekend and we have to keep working as the car is doing a fantastic job and still achieve a good result.”
Giovinazzi was then asked what that performance meant for him in terms of keeping his Alfa Romeo seat for 2020, but the Italian does not want to get too distracted from the job in hand.
“You know, I don’t want to focus too much,” he said.
“I think if I am doing well, nobody can take my seat. I think what happened in Spa, until the last lap I was P9, now yet again P9, we need to just be on the points in every race.
“Singapore will be a completely different, high-downforce street track, so we need to see how the car will perform there but I’m sure we can also have a good result there.”
There is already a strong paddock rumour that Giovinazzi has already been retained for 2020 but just has not been announced yet.
