Valtteri Bottas has said there will be “no worries” over a new Mercedes deal if he and the Silver Arrows can have another successful year together.
As Mercedes are only prepared to offer the Finn one-year contract extensions at a time, the speculation over Bottas’ seat never fully drifts away and 2020 is no different.
Mercedes-backed George Russell and the soon to be ex-Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel have both been linked with joining Lewis Hamilton on the other side of the garage and the Silver Arrows boss Toto Wolff has done little to quash either rumour.
But, as usual, Bottas is staying relaxed about the whole situation, especially when there has been no racing so far this year to make any further judgments on what may lay in store for 2021.
He sounded confident that a new Mercedes extension will be on the way if he meets expectations again in 2020.
“I’m only contracted for this year. That’s how the contracts were made before,” Bottas said in an F1 Instagram Live interview.
“But we still haven’t done a single race, so any speculation before we start racing is talking, no more than that, and it’s not a new situation for me. It’s been the same every single year.
“I’ve one single target in my mind for this season, and I’ll try to take all the other thoughts away.
“If I can follow those targets and my performance targets, and if our team can perform well, then there’s going to be no worries about any contract.”
