Valtteri Bottas has admitted that only managing to qualify in P4 left him compromised for Sunday’s Singapore Grand Prix.

The Finn held his position throughout the race, and finished just outside the podium places at the end of the 61-lap race.

“I think yesterday not being the best made today more difficult which is a shame so from my side, P4, I am not happy with that,” Bottas uttered his statement from Saturday evening.

“As a team, we got more points than Ferrari, and Lewis [Hamilton] managed to get more gap to Sebastian [Vettel] so I guess that is good.”

Lewis Hamilton extended his lead to 40 points over the German, with Sebastian Vettel finishing in P3 in Singapore.

In the Constructors’, Mercedes now have a 37 point lead over their Italian rivals.

Bottas believes that the key to Hamilton winning was Saturday’s Q3 lap, but is not sure why he could not do the same.

“I think, for sure, Lewis did an exceptional lap but I think from my side, there was still time to be found and I don’t have much more reasons yet but that is something we are going to discuss with the team next week to fully understand,” the Finn said.

“I am still going to be back here next year so I need to be better then.”

Bottas also believes that Mercedes have closed the gap to Ferrari in terms of who has got the quicker package.

“It seems to be very equal,” he added.

“I think we were surprised how good we were this weekend.

“That is down to all the work at the factory, we made a lot of changes to this year’s car which allowed us to be quick also in Singapore which is an amazing job by the team.”

With the P4 finish, Bottas is now just three points behind compatriot Kimi Raikkonen in the standings.
