Fans ‘can laugh all they want’ at Sainz’s Ferrari move

Carlos Sainz starts proper work at Ferrari with first day in the simulator.

Carlos Sainz is not concerning himself with ongoing comments and jokes about his upcoming move to Ferrari.

Sainz will be replacing Sebastian Vettel at the Scuderia ahead of the 2021 season but, given Ferrari’s continued struggles with a very uncompetitive SF1000, he has been the butt of many jokes and left some pondering whether Sainz was already regretting his decision to join them.

But the Spaniard himself is unmoved by the surrounding chatter and can actually see the funny side in the jokes and memes being shared online.

“Honestly, they can laugh as much as they want,” Sainz told Autosport.

“I think they are actually pretty funny, some of [the jokes].

“People have a lot of free time and they come up with these very funny ideas. And I actually laugh also.

“When the jokes are about me or the jokes are about the drivers, I’m the first one to laugh and I actually enjoy them.

“It doesn’t mean that they are right or wrong, it’s just they’re funny.

“I guess that’s what they pretend to be, so good on them.”

Just like Sainz was prepared to move to the UK to be closer to the McLaren team, he is also set to have a home in Italy so he can be close to Ferrari’s Maranello base.

But as Sainz tries to launch himself into the battle for P4 in the Drivers’ Championship and help McLaren secure ‘best of the rest’ in the Constructors’ Championship, he has so far not found a new home.

“My team mainly, more than me, is trying to find a place,” Sainz said.

“As you know I’m still focused on my season this year.

“But as soon as the season is over and I’m thinking to next year, I will move to Italy when I find it convenient.”
