Carlos Sainz can win a World title at Ferrari, with Felipe Massa convinced he can cope with the pressure of racing in red.
Last week Ferrari announced that Sainz would be taking Sebastian Vettel’s race seat for the 2021 season, teaming up with Charles Leclerc in the Scuderia’s youngest line up in 50 years.
It is a dream move for Sainz but one that has many questioning how he will cope given Leclerc’s position at Maranello.
Last year the Monégasque driver became the darling of Ferrari, winning two races, one of which was the Italian Grand Prix.
That saw the team’s politics swing in his favour with reports suggesting Sainz has been signed as his number two.
Massa, however, reckons Ferrari will give both Leclerc and Sainz equal opportunity.
“Leclerc got there as number two, he showed that he could be a driver who could have everything to beat and things changed,” he told AS.
“It can be so. The team has to give the same opportunity to both.”
Asked whether the Spaniard has what it takes to win a Drivers’ Championship with Ferrari, the Brazilian replied: “I think yes but it will depend on him.
“We will have to see how his first year there goes, but he has talent and capacity.
“He already started impressing in his first year at Toro Rosso in the battle with Verstappen.
“He has shown in these years that he has grown and gained experience, last year he had a very important season at McLaren.
“It is an opportunity for him to race in Ferrari and I think he can do a fantastic job, he has experience, he is smart.”
He added: “There is no team that has as much pressure as Ferrari. This is not easy for a driver.
“The first year you have to understand how it works, but I think Carlos will do it quickly, just like Leclerc did.”
