Carlos Sainz Sr is keeping his cards close to his chest about his son’s potential move to Ferrari – but did say “things are accelerating”.
On Tuesday Ferrari confirmed that Sebastian Vettel will leave the team at the end of this season.
Carlos Sainz Jr is one of the pundits’ favourites to take the seat, reportedly up against Daniel Ricciardo.
Sainz Jr, though, is believed to have won the battle and will be confirmed by Ferrari before the week is over.
His father isn’t giving anything away.
“I can tell you little at this point, I do not want to deceive anyone,” he told Movistar+.
“It is clear that things are accelerating and that the teams are not going to wait for the season to start because it is not even known if there will 100 percent be a season.
“It is true that he is happy where he is but it is true that lately things are moving a lot.
“I want to think that sooner or later there will be a solution, because we cannot stay two more months based on these rumours and these stories.
“But you are going to allow me that I cannot tell you anything more, these are delicate moments.”
Sainz Sr reckons his son is up for the challenge having made a breakthrough last season when he bagged his maiden F1 podium with McLaren.
He added: “Life is happening, either you stagnate or you take steps, and from what I see as a father he has the ambition to continue doing better, to take steps forward as he gave the year past.
“That has to be the philosophy of any athlete. All I can do is encourage him to do it.”
