Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc gives a thumbs-up on the grid of the 2021 Hungarian GP.

Charles Leclerc has described the “incredible challenge” of being entrusted with the task of bringing lasting success back to Ferrari in the future.

Leclerc and Carlos Sainz have largely excelled in their cars this season following Ferrari’s worst Constructors’ performance in 40 years, and the Monegasque driver feels a “duty” to put the Scuderia back at the head of the Formula 1 field.

As it stands, the two-time grand prix winner is three points behind team-mate Sainz at the halfway point of the season and Ferrari are level with McLaren in the Constructors’ Championship in the battle for P3, behind Mercedes and Red Bull.

Leclerc has had two pole positions in 2021 so far and while he knows he is currently unable to fight at the front with Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen on a regular basis, Jock Clear feels the Ferrari driver is more than capable of taking the fight to them with the right machinery.

Likewise, Leclerc feels confident he and the team are up for the challenge of trying to get back to winning ways sooner rather than later.

“Obviously, I would love to be in the fight for the title with them and it’s great to see there is actually a battle,” Leclerc told The Race.

“On the other hand, I am very happy with where I am now and it’s an incredible challenge to have the duty to bring Ferrari back to the top. The story will only be better if we managed to do so as a team.

“We’ll keep working and I’m sure the happiness will come very soon.”

Ferrari have improved both their results and consistency this year, with Sainz and Leclerc standing on the podium three times between them and featuring in the points on almost a race-by-race basis.

With those advancements, the 23-year-old feels the team is a different place to be entirely when compared to the same period last season.

“The last races show we are doing something right,” said Leclerc. “We have been working very hard.

“If you look where we started at the beginning of last year and where we are now, it is a very different situation and I think this is because, and thanks to, all the work from the team.

“So I am confident everything we are doing is going in the right direction. It doesn’t give us any certainty that it will be much better next year, but I feel like if we keep working like this I trust we will be back to where want to be, which is to win regularly very soon.”
