Ricciardo wants to be ‘lifted’ by Norris

Daniel Ricciardo would “love” Lando Norris to “lift” him with some stern competition when the pair become team-mates at McLaren.

Carlos Sainz will leave McLaren at the end of 2020 to join Ferrari, opening the door for Ricciardo to leave Renault and take the vacant McLaren seat.

It’s a certainty that putting two of F1’s biggest personalities in Ricciardo and Norris together will prove highly entertaining, but Ricciardo also wants some competition.

The Aussie spoke of how he wants Norris to challenge him like Max Verstappen did at Red Bull, and expects that to happen.

Verstappen has also spoke in the past about the subject, saying he missed having a driver of Ricciardo’s standard as a team-mate.

Speaking on the F1 Nation podcast, Ricciardo said: “At Red Bull, I felt with Max we lifted each other by pushing each other and being the competitors we are. I would love that, and expect that, from Lando.

“I expect it because he had a really strong rookie year and outqualified Carlos, which was quite a statement. I think we are both pretty easy-going when the helmet’s off but I think you will see some good competition.”

But before 2021, Ricciardo expects the same from Esteban Ocon who will be his team-mate for that final season with Renault.

“Same with Ocon this year,” he said.

“I haven’t raced him as a team-mate yet and it’s the same kind of deal. I’m really excited to have these young ankle-biters coming at me!”
