Daniel Ricciardo will "step away for a few days" after woeful Monaco GP.

Following his dismal display at the Monaco Grand Prix, Daniel Ricciardo will “step away for a few days” rather than “over-analyse”.

The Aussie has found life far from smooth ever since making the switch from Renault to McLaren for 2021, a move that was supposed to lay the foundations for a future title challenge.

On the other side of the garage Lando Norris is certainly creating hope for a world title in his future, but Ricciardo looks all out of sorts.

And without doubt the Monaco Grand Prix was the lowest point of Ricciardo’s McLaren career so far. At no stage of the weekend was he even close to Norris’ performance level, and come race day crossed the line in P12 while Norris made the podium for the second time this season.

But instead of over-analysing the “anomaly” that was the 2021 Monaco GP, Ricciardo instead will step away and look to come back refreshed for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

“I think the whole weekend was simply just a weekend to forget,” he told Sky F1.

“Obviously car four [Lando Norris] and the rest of the team got a podium, so I obviously want to congratulate them and they got it right.

“I don’t even know if it was we got it wrong, it just never really got going. We didn’t really do a crazy different set-up, the cars I want to say were nearly identical from a set-up point of view.

“I’m not trying to be too clever with that either, obviously I’ve got more to learn with this car than Lando, so I’m not trying to be different, trying to just follow suit and move forward with that.

“But just a strange weekend really from the get-go and one to forget. I think probably I’m not going to over-analyse this one, I think just forward for Baku and go from there.

“This year there has certainly been those races where it is like ‘yeah I’ve got to find a bit more but it will come’, I mean this weekend was more of an anomaly with such a big difference.

“Getting lapped [by Norris], might be the first time [by a team-mate], I don’t really know what to say.

“I will definitely look into it, but I think when it is a weekend like this and as far off as it was, probably best just to step away for a few days.”
