Daniel Ricciardo will take a Red Bull Formula 1 car around the Nurburgring Nordschleife in September, in what will be the first time modern F1 machinery has headed around the legendary German circuit for a decade.

The full layout of the infamous ‘Green Hell’ used to play host to Formula 1 as the original venue of the German Grand Prix, until the shortened grand prix layout came into effect over safety concerns on the Nordschleife – which at 14 miles long is far beyond the length of any current Formula 1 circuit.

But the Red Bull Formula Nurburgring event on 9 September will see Ricciardo among a host of “legendary greats of motorsport on two and four wheels” along with “young racing talents” as he takes in demo laps of the Nordschleife in a modern Formula 1 car, as part of the festivities surrounding the 12h Nurburgring endurance weekend.

Ricciardo confirmed the news on social media, saying in a video clip: “What’s going on everyone, I just got my invite to the Red Bull Formula Nurburgring, which is pretty cool. I’m going to be driving a Red Bull car around the famous track, so I’m very excited about that.”

Other names are due to be announced to appear at the Red Bull Formula Nurburgring event in September in the coming weeks, with Ricciardo set to be the first driver to take a modern Formula 1 car around the Nordschleife since Michael Schumacher did so in a Mercedes in 2013.

This appearance will make up a part of Ricciardo’s reserve driver duties with Red Bull in 2023, alongside heading to selected race weekends as the team’s official third driver and possible tyre testing, as well as simulator duties at the team’s Milton Keynes base.
