Zak Brown says he and Daniel Ricciardo are discussing the terms of a new wager between them for the 2022 season.

Ricciardo has become known in recent years for entering into bets with his team bosses – and coming out on the winning side.

That was the case in 2020 when the Australian was at Renault and struck a bet with team principal Cyril Abiteboul that he would achieve a podium finish.

When Ricciardo did just that by finishing third in the Eifel Grand Prix at the Nurburgring, Abiteboul had to honour his pledge to get a tattoo – which he did towards the end of last year.

But there was an actual reward for Ricciardo in 2021 after his latest podium bet, which was landed in the best possible style. Despite struggling for much of his first year with McLaren, he led home Lando Norris in a one-two for the team at the Italian Grand Prix.

That achievement earned the 32-year-old a drive in the 1984 Wrangler Chevrolet Monte Carlo, raced in NASCAR by one of his heroes, Dale Earnhardt, a car now owned by Brown and which he got to try out during the United States Grand Prix weekend in Austin.

So will there be a new wager for the 2022 campaign? That is a work in progress, according to Brown.

“There’s no new bet yet, but it’s now being discussed,” said the McLaren Racing CEO.

“I guess it’s that time of pre-season to start having some fun and thinking about what we might want to do to celebrate some sort of success we have together.

“Our drivers are great personalities and we have a lot of fun with them. They are extremely serious once they put their helmet on. But I think the environment we have with our drivers in our racing team, we like to have fun and that’s part of it.

“We will have to figure that out because hopefully, we will have something to celebrate this year.”

Although it had not formed part of a bet between them, tattoo fan Ricciardo did accompany Brown to get inked while they were in Texas for the US GP last autumn.

That was the result of a challenge set by Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff in aid of the Grand Prix Trust charity, with the Austrian urging Brown to overcome his fear of needles.

He did so by having a tattoo of the layout of Monza, scene of McLaren’s greatest F1 day for many years, on his left arm along with the date – September 12 2021.
