Gutierrez lands new role at Mercedes

Esteban Gutierrez named brand and business ambassador at Mercedes.
Mercedes have confirmed that Esteban Gutierrez has been handed a new role as their brand and business ambassador.
The Mexican racer competed in Formula 1 between 2013-16 across stints for Sauber and Haas, making 59 starts and scoring 6 points.
Since 2018 though he has been working with Mercedes, serving as a simulator, reserve and development driver.
He will continue to be present with the Mercedes team at race weekends and promotional events, and as part of this new role, Mercedes state that Gutierrez will “also work with other areas of the team, including management, commercial, and marketing departments, with a particular focus on strengthening commercial relationships in the Latin American market.”
“I’m delighted to take on a new, expanded role at Mercedes, developing my experience across all areas of the team as I begin the next chapter of my career off the track,” said Gutierrez in an official statement.
“The unprecedented success of the team in recent years has strengthened the Mercedes brand around the world, and I have enjoyed working to promote and deepen the team’s connections with Latin American markets during my time at Mercedes.
“Over the last three years, I have been privileged to work with the exceptional talent throughout the team, and I look forward to continuing this collaboration further over the coming years in my new business-focused role.”

Mercedes team principal and CEO Toto Wolff added: “Esteban is a valued member of Mercedes and his work behind the scenes since 2018 has made an important contribution to delivering maximum performance from the car at every race weekend.
“Since I have known Esteban, I have been impressed by his overall understanding of our industry and seen the potential for him to make a broader contribution to our success.
“He has supported us to develop valuable commercial relationships in the Latin American market, and he is well-placed to contribute more deeply to other areas of the team as well.
“Esteban’s new position will enable him to add value across the team and we are excited to work with him even more closely.”
Gutierrez was in contention for a Mercedes appearance in 2020 after Sir Lewis Hamilton was ruled out the Sakhir Grand Prix following a positive COVID-19 test, but Gutierrez did not have enough points for a valid superlicence.
Mercedes prospect George Russell instead got the call-up for that race weekend.
