Max Verstappen won the Dutch Grand Prix for the second year running, to the joy of the orange-clad Zandvoort crowd, to take another big step towards a second World Championship.

Verstappen lined up on pole position and made the ideal start, with the only drama through the opening sequence of corners being slight contact between Carlos Sainz and Lewis Hamilton as they duelled for third place. Strong starts were made by Lance Stroll and Esteban Ocon as they gained two and three places respectively into the top 10.

Sainz’s hopes of a podium finish were severely dented by a slow 12-second first pit-stop on lap 15, after which Ferrari made a much better job of changing Charles Leclerc’s tyres. But the Monegasque driver, who had been running second, still found himself five seconds down on Verstappen after the first round of stops.

They were behind the Mercedes cars, however, who at the time had appeared to be on one-stop strategies, with Hamilton’s visit to the pits for hard tyres on lap 30 leaving Verstappen back in the lead after the Dutchman had overtaken George Russell on track and increasing his lead over Leclerc.

A bizarre incident involving Yuki Tsunoda – who stopped on track, got going again, went into the pits and then stopped terminally trackside – triggered a Virtual Safety Car period that allowed Verstappen to make a ‘cheaper’ second pit-stop and retain the advantage over Hamilton, who switched to a two-stop strategy.

But on lap 55, with 17 remaining, Valtteri BottasAlfa Romeo ground to a halt at the end of the main straight with an engine problem and brought out the Safety Car.

Hamilton did not stop but Verstappen and Russell did, the Red Bull driver on his new soft tyres getting past the medium-shod Mercedes into Turn 1 on the racing restart – an advantage he held until the end. Russell and Leclerc both passed Hamilton to complete the podium positions.
