Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton turns round a corner during a practice session for the Italian Grand Prix. Monza, September 2022.

Carlos Sainz was the fastest man at Monza as he beat out Red Bull’s Max Verstappen in FP2 of the Italian Grand Prix.

Ferrari snatched a one-two in the first practice session of the day and continued that good form into the second session with Sainz’s 1:21.664 lap.

Red Bull’s Verstappen was 0.143 seconds behind while Sainz’s Ferrari team-mate Charles Leclerc was P3, 0.193 seconds behind his team-mate.

Verstappen’s team-mate Sergio Perez ended the day’s running in P6, 0.730 seconds behind Sainz.

Away from the title contenders, McLaren’s Lando Norris impressed as he finished P4 ahead of George Russell.

The session was red flagged at the halfway mark after Mick Schumacher was instructed by his race engineer Gary Gannon to pull over at the side of the track. The result was very limited running for Schumacher who sat out FP1 for Antonio Giovinazzi.

Towards the end of the session, Yuki Tsunoda was investigated for failing to slow under yellow flags.

Aston Martin, who set-up their car in what Sky Sports F1 pundit Martin Brundle described as a “traditional Monza set-up”, failed to see the benefit of their work as Sebastian Vettel ended P17 while Lance Stroll finished P18.
