Red Bull have claimed a 1-2 in the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, with Sergio Perez leading home teammate Max Verstappen.

Perez came out on top of a pedestrian race on the streets of Baku, with the Mexican driver benefitting from a Safety Car intervention that took Max Verstappen out of the lead.

With the reigning World Champion starting from second on the grid, he stalked pole-sitter Charles Leclerc for the first three laps of the race before overtaking the Ferrari heading down the main straight.

Perez took a few more laps to overtake Leclerc to set up a Red Bull 1-2, and had closed to within DRS range of Verstappen when the race was interrupted by an incident involving Nyck de Vries.

The AlphaTauri driver clipped the inside wall of Turn 5 and couldn’t turn into the next corner, forcing him to come to a halt at the side of the track. Verstappen was immediately brought in for fresh tyres, but the Safety Car took a further lap to be deployed.

As a result, with Perez pitting a lap later, the Mexican driver came out in front of Leclerc and Verstappen. The Dutch driver quickly cleared Leclerc but, for the entire remaining 40 laps, was powerless against Perez’s pace.

Repeating his Saudi Arabian GP feat of holding off his illustrious teammate, Perez came home as victor ahead of Verstappen and Leclerc, with Fernando Alonso claiming fourth for Aston Martin.

The race was overshadowed by a dramatic late-race incident when Esteban Ocon, pitting on the final lap to conform with the regulations demanding a pit-stop, came barreling into the pitlane only to find photographers and marshals blocking his path. Fortunately, Ocon was able to reach his pit box without incident.
