F1 2023 results: Qualifying timings from the Austrian Grand Prix

Red Bull's Max Verstappen in action at the Austrian Grand Prix. Spielberg, June 2023.
Here are the latest F1 2023 results as qualifying took place at the Red Bull Ring in Austria ahead of this weekend’s race.
Max Verstappen has taken pole position for Sunday’s Austrian Grand Prix, with the reigning World Champion improving upon an already impressive first flying lap to put in a 1:04.391 in his Red Bull to pip Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc by less than half a tenth of a second.
The Monegasque took more risks in the final sector of his final flying lap to run Verstappen so close, just falling shy of the lap Verstappen put in in the final seconds of the Q3 session.
Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz finished in third and less than two-tenths off pole, while McLaren’s Lando Norris finished fourth ahead of Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton.
Lance Stroll outqualified Fernando Alonso at Aston Martin to claim sixth ahead of the Spaniard in seventh, with Nico Hulkenberg putting in another great qualifying showing to claim eighth place on the grid.
The top 10 was rounded out by Alpine’s Pierre Gasly and Williams’ Alex Albon.

George Russell delivers intriguing update on narrowing Red Bull and Mercedes gap
Track limits violations were the name of the game during a frantic qualifying hour at the Red Bull Ring, with two big names falling foul of putting their wheels outside the white lines in the final sector during Q2.
While Verstappen set the pace in Q2, even the Dutch driver couldn’t escape the annoyance of the white lines as his first laptime was deleted, leading him to curse about the limits before nailing his second run.
But Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez was eliminated after having two track limits violations during Q2, despite having had put in a laptime good enough for second place. The Mexican finished in 15th as a result, one of several drivers to have a laptime deleted.
Mercedes also fell foul of the rules, with George Russell finishing down in 11th after failing to find enough pace on his final run after his first time was deleted.
Joining Perez and Russell in the elimination zone in Q2 were Alpine’s Esteban Ocon in 12th, McLaren’s Oscar Piastri in 13th, and Alfa Romeo’s Valtteri Bottas in 14th.
Verstappen had topped the times in the first part of qualifying, which had a brief interruption due to a spin from Bottas as the Finn spun exiting Turn 1 and had trouble getting his car moving again.
The reigning World Champion popped in a 1:05.116 to lead the way by just over half a tenth over Perez, who put in his fastest time right at the chequered flag.
Eliminated from the first part of qualifying were AlphaTauri’s Yuki Tsunoda, Alfa Romeo’s Zhou Guanyu, Williams’ Logan Sargeant, Haas’ Kevin Magnussen, and the second AlphaTauri with Nyck de Vries bringing up the rear of the field.
