F1 2023 results: Qualifying timings from the Canadian Grand Prix
Here are the latest F1 2023 results as qualifying took place at a very damp Circuit Gilles Villeneuve ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix.
Qualifying presented the drivers with a very difficult challenge as grip levels changed all the time with dry/wet lines developing on the tight and twisty circuit.
Q1 saw a big-name exit as Pierre Gasly failed to clear the first hurdle, joining him early on the sidelines were Yuki Tsunoda, Nyck de Vries, Logan Sargeant and Zhou Guanyu.
But Gasly had every right to feel aggrieved about his early departure as he had to take massive avoiding action to prevent a huge crash with Carlos Sainz at the final chicane, a driver who had already been investigated by the FIA during FP3 for alleged blocking at the very same corner.
Q2 saw another chaotic unfold as drivers switched from intermediates to dry tyres, trying to take full advantage of the break between heavy rain showers.
So much so, Alex Albon was a shock P1 at the end of the Q2 session, a deserved reward after being the first driver and team to make the switch to the soft tyre.
A costly mistake from Sergio Perez saw the pressure on him increase further with a crushing Q2 exit, while Charles Leclerc was another notable name to exit stage left with Ferrari once again guilty of a lack of organisation in a qualifying session that demanded it.
Q3 was bookmarked by a crash involving Oscar Piastri and the red flags needed to come out in order for his McLaren car to be recovered.
It was a crucial red flag, too, as those able to set times before Piastri’s crash were the ones sitting pretty at the top of the timesheet come the end of the session. The rain intensified significantly in the closing moments, ensuring that it was impossible to find any further improvement with regards to lap time.
Whilst it was a familiar name in Max Verstappen on pole position, the biggest headline of them all was Nico Hulkenberg, who joins the Dutchman on the front row!
