Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton flashes past in final practice at the Hungarian Grand Prix. Budapest, July 2023.

Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton set the pace in FP3 at the Hungarian Grand Prix ahead of the all-important qualifying session in Budapest.

The British driver’s fastest lap of 1:17.811s was good enough to give him the edge over reigning World Champion Max Verstappen, who complained of a lack of grip in his Red Bull over team radio.

It was a more encouraging session for Sergio Perez, who recovered from an embarrassing crash on his first lap of practice on Friday to secure third in FP3.

With a new qualifying protocol in place for this weekend, which will cars obliged to run hards (Q1) mediums (Q2) and softs (Q3), the qualifying simulations were conducted on various tyre compounds.

That resulted in the unusual sight of some drivers – including Alfa Romeo team-mates Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu – chasing quicks laps on the hard tyres in the final 20 minutes.
