Max Verstappen continued to set the pace on Friday at Silverstone, but Ferrari are threatening to bring the fight while Williams continued to trouble at the sharp end.

Verstappen, like he had done in FP1, claimed the fastest time in the second hour of Friday practice, but rather than holding an advantage of four-tenths, this time Carlos Sainz was a mere 0.022s adrift in the Ferrari come the chequered flag.

Alex Albon meanwhile proved that his FP1 heroics were no fluke, once more clocking the third-fastest time, the gap to Verstappen only two-tenths.

While the session was delayed by five minutes as a sweeping of the track was required, the delay lasted longer for Ferrari and Charles Leclerc as news of an electrical issue on his SF-23 filtered through.

There was also a great deal of concern down at McLaren in regards to Lando Norris’ MCL60, frantic work ongoing around the front area of that challenger, all while Verstappen was setting the pace with Sainz only 0.02s adrift. Albon was continuing to impress a few tenths back.

As the session enter its second half, the dispersing of the Ferrari crew from around Leclerc’s stricken challenger spelt danger. And indeed, that was his session done without a wheel having been turned.

Turning the wheel was proving a little tougher for Lance Stroll meanwhile after a stone flicked up and hit his finger, but the Aston Martin driver soldiered on to complete his race simulation, which was the run of choice across the grid to close out the session.

A puncture picked up by De Vries caused him to come to a stop after negotiating Village as the chequered flag came out, the AlphaTauri driver thankfully able to slow and make the corner in what could have been a rather nasty incident.
