Lewis Hamilton is back on pole position in Formula 1 after snatching the P1 grid slot in Hungary from Max Verstappen.

It was not the full fairytale story for Mercedes though, as while Hamilton bagged them their first pole of F1 2023, his team-mate George Russell fell at the Q1 stage after encountering traffic woes.

Lewis Hamilton 33-race wait is over

Not since the 2021 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix had Hamilton been on pole position in Formula 1, but his wait is finally over as he pipped Red Bull’s dominant World Championship leader Max Verstappen to P1 by just 0.003s.

Keeping a close eye on the former title rivals on Sunday will be McLaren’s Lando Norris as he launches from P3, joined on row two by team-mate Oscar Piastri.

Zhou Guanyu delivered a mighty display in the Alfa Romeo to secure his best-ever Formula 1 grid slot in P5, and he will have Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc between himself and team-mate Valtteri Bottas.

Fernando Alonso, Sergio Perez and Nico Hulkenberg complete the top 10.

Row six will be headed by Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz, a surprise casualty of the Q2 session. He will be joined by Alpine’s Esteban Ocon.

Daniel Ricciardo starts P13 after a solid opening qualifying effort with AlphaTauri upon his Formula 1 return, outqualifying team-mate Yuki Tsunoda, and will have Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll for company.

Alpine’s Pierre Gasly heads row eight alongside Williams’ Alex Albon, with Tsunoda and Mercedes’ George Russell, who suffered a shock Q1 exit after Mercedes played the waiting game and lost, lining-up behind them.

Haas’ Kevin Magnussen and Williams’ Logan Sargeant form the final row.
