Ferrari drivers Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz stand together after qualifying at Monza.

The F1 starting grid has been set for the 2023 Italian Grand Prix at Monza, with a superb pole for Carlos Sainz for Ferrari.

Sainz pipped Max Verstappen by just 0.013s with his final Q3 lap to take his first pole of the season, and the added honour of leading the grid away from Ferrari’s home race on Sunday.

Ferrari team-mate Charles Leclerc is due to line up third after clocking close to his team-mate’s time, the Monégasque driver admitting his disappointment at not taking pole himself in a remarkable turnaround in speed for the Scuderia after an off-colour Dutch Grand Prix.

George Russell and Sergio Perez rounded out the top five in qualifying, while at the other end of the spectrum, Lance Stroll and both Alpine drivers were the big names to drop out in Q1 on Saturday.
