Fernando Alonso makes key career admission in F1 ‘time machine’ scenario

Aston Martin driver Fernando Alonso stands while the national anthems play on the podium. Australia April 2023.
Fernando Alonso has revealed the honest advice he would give if he could hop into a time machine and talk to his younger self – and admitted he would “behave differently”.
Alonso, now 42, is still at the very top of his F1 game and, at the Italian Grand Prix in Monza, became the first-ever driver to reach an incredible 20,000 laps in the sport. Most people would kill for just one.
With that huge amount of experience to draw upon, Alonso sat down at the Peroni Nastro Azzurro 0.0% bar alongside good friend and Aston Martin ambassador Pedro de la Rosa to reflect on their high-level careers, which have seen both reach the absolute pinnacle of motorsport.
Fernando Alonso warns against F1 obsession
“In a way, people are not paying attention to what you do,” De la Rosa responded when asked what advice he would give to a young Pedro.
“Just enjoy it. In a race car you think that everyone knows where you are braking, how you are turning in [to a corner] but people have no idea what is going on.”

Alonso, meanwhile, has repeatedly said he has no regrets about his F1 career and the different paths he has gone down over the years, but he does seem to suggest that there is more to life than just the F1 dream when racing up through the ranks as a youngster.
“I would say the same [as Pedro], enjoy it more,” Alonso said.
“I think when you are driving in different categories, eventually you just want to become a Formula 1 driver so you are not enjoying those categories [you are driving in] because the pressure is just on to get to the top level.
“If I could go back, I would behave differently and maybe enjoy a little bit more of my free time, the podium celebrations, the team dinners that back then it just felt like a moment where I was losing time
to prepare for the next race.”
