Fernando Alonso has announced he has split up with his long-term partner, Andrea Schlager, confirming the news on social media after taking a podium finish at the Australian Grand Prix.

Alonso had kept his relationship with the Austrian journalist and TV presenter largely out of the public eye, but the couple had been together for the past two years after they reportedly met in the Formula 1 paddock.

Confirming the news on his Instagram story with a picture of the two of them, Alonso wrote: “We wanted to tell you that our relationship as a couple ended. We have been lucky enough to share a fantastic time together, and it will continue to be so, but on a different form of affection.

“As you have probably seen, we have continued working on and off track on various projects together also during this time, and we will keep doing so with deep love and respect for each other.

“We thought it is appropriate to share this as you have all been very supportive. Thanks for that. Love Fer & Andrea.”

The news came after Alonso had taken third place at Sunday’s Australian Grand Prix, finishing behind fellow World Champions in Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton as a podium of all title-winners occurred in a grand prix for the first time since the 2012 European Grand Prix in Valencia, which Alonso won ahead of Kimi Raikkonen and Michael Schumacher.

Schlager was in the paddock herself over the weekend in Melbourne, working for Austrian channel Servus TV. She is also an ambassador for carmaker SEAT through their high-performance Cupra brand, with their most recent public photo on social media being posted as they held Alonso’s trophy together after he took a podium finish at the F1 2023 season opener in Bahrain.
