Lewis Hamilton started his Formula 1 career as team-mate to Fernando Alonso, who would “love” that to be how they finish their respective stories too.

It was not exactly the most harmonious of seasons together for the pair, Alonso switching to McLaren for 2007 after back-to-back titles with Renault, where he lined-up alongside McLaren’s newly-promoted F1 rookie in Hamilton.

Alonso would ultimately leave McLaren at the end of that campaign, but it’s a driver rivalry that has continued to simmer away between the pair who are now veterans of the Formula 1 grid and still operating at the peak of their powers.

Hamilton and Alonso have found themselves within range of each other early in F1 2023, treating us to a stunning battle in Bahrain, as Hamilton looks to drag Mercedes back into title contention, while Alonso is spearheading Aston Martin’s charge to reach a title-contending level for the first time.

But, despite being on different paths right now, and the pair no strangers to some (often light-hearted) button pressing, Alonso revealed that he actually would “love” to re-unite with Hamilton as a perfect ending to their careers in F1.

“It would be nice to end our careers together, I’d love that,” revealed to the Daily Mail.

Reflecting on that turbulent year as McLaren team-mates, Alonso stressed that he and Hamilton always respected each other as competitors and that certainly has not changed.

“We had a difficult season, but we respected what the other was doing on track and still do,” he said. “We each consider the other to be a talented driver and one of the toughest competitors we have ever met.”

Does this Fernando Alonso reveal spell trouble for Lance Stroll?

By swapping Alpine for Aston Martin, Alonso became the latest multi-time World Champion to test Lance Stroll, the Canadian driver racing for the team which his father Lawrence owns.

This fact alone means very few could ever foresee Lawrence dropping his son from the Aston Martin driver line-up, but if the team’s leading driver Alonso is really looking for the opportunity to have Hamilton as a team-mate once more, then this could spell trouble for Lance.

A pre-season cycling crash was far from ideal for Lance as he missed testing before returning miraculously in time for the Bahrain season-opener. But, while just being on the grid for that race was a stunning achievement, the fact is that we are now three rounds into the season and he is yet to really lay a glove on Alonso, meaning he really needs to step it up a bit.

Aston Martin are no longer a midfield outfit, and seemingly now well on their way to the future title challenges which Lawrence Stroll craves, the fact that Alonso would like to partner Hamilton, combined with Hamilton not yet committing to Mercedes beyond 2023, could be enough to make Lawrence explore that possibility.

Hamilton says he is Mercedes for life, so maybe a Mercedes-powered team will be enough in that respect as he chases that record eighth World Championship.
