Although believing Ferrari made the right choice in signing Charles Leclerc, Mattia Binotto concedes his 2019 season will “tell us a bit more”.
This year Leclerc is stepping up to a Ferrari race seat and in doing so becomes the youngster driver in three decades to race in the red.
The Monaco driver is moving up from Alfa Romeo, formerly known as Sauber, where he spent 2018 adjusting to life in Formula 1.
The links between the two teams as well as his stint at the Ferrari driver academy means Leclerc’s talent is not a surprise to Ferrari.
However, Binotto admits it was nice to see him finish testing 0.01s down on his more experienced team-mate, Sebastian Vettel.
“Charles is a good driver, certainly a very fast driver,” said team boss Binotto.
“I think that in Barcelona he focused on himself, understanding the car, working with a new team, new engineers, and a lot of the things.
“More important for us is to understand the car; they’ve [Vettel and Leclerc] done very similar lap times.
“I think that proves that Charles is certainly a fast driver. I think we knew it since the past. It’s now many years he’s spent with Ferrari.
“He spent last year with Alfa Romeo/Sauber, so nothing with Charles is a surprise in that respect so it’s not the testing in Barcelona that is telling us that that was the right choice.
“It was simply the right choice. But the season will tell us a bit more.”
