Charles Leclerc locks up. Sao Paulo, November 2022

Charles Leclerc locks up during the first free practice session of the Sao Paulo Grand Prix. Sao Paulo, November 2022.

Sergio Perez ended the all important FP1 top of the timesheets as drivers prepared for qualifying at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix.

With the Sprint weekend shaking up the order of the proceedings, an added importance was applied to the first outing of the weekend and all three slick tyre compounds were on display at some point.

There was just 0.008 seconds separating the top three with Perez marginally pipping Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen.

It was an encouraging performance for Ferrari who, with Leclerc’s P2 and Sainz’s P4, looked to be back on the pace following their difficulties in Mexico.

Verstappen, who never seemed truly comfortable with the balance of the car, finished P3 while the two Mercedes cars were in P5 and P6.
