Formula 1 fans have voted the British Grand Prix as being their favourite race of the season so far, with a whopping 50% of the vote.

A fan poll released by Formula 1 garnered views from around the world about the 2022 season to date, with the drama of Silverstone coming out on top as the best race of the year so far.

A chaotic start on the day saw a multi-car tangle that caught Zhou Guanyu’s Alfa Romeo in an awkward place, flipping him upside down and catapulting into the catch fence at Abbey in perhaps the most concerning moment of 2022.

Suffice to say, then, that there was a significant amount of relief from the Formula 1 community when he was helped out of his car relatively unscathed.

The drama continued at the front as well, with Charles Leclerc left as a sitting duck after a late Safety Car period when he was left out on heavily used tyres.

As F1 gets set to return, a new technical directive could have a major impact on the first race back.

But instead of giving his team-mate a gap at the restart, Carlos Sainz told Ferrari to “stop inventing” their strategy and quickly swept past Leclerc for the lead, which he would keep until the chequered flag and take his first victory in Formula 1 at the 150th attempt.

In second with 18% of the vote came the Hungarian Grand Prix, the final race before the sport’s summer break.

The first surprise of that weekend came with Mercedes driver George Russell taking pole position in stunning fashion, leading the race for the first 30 laps before Leclerc made a bold move around the outside of Turn 1 to steal first place.

But another Ferrari strategy error saw Leclerc fitted with hard tyres which had shown few signs of life on any other car, which saw him plummet down the field.

Meanwhile, Max Verstappen was on the way through the field after an issue in qualifying saw him start down in P10, picking his way up through the pack and eventually going on to take a superb victory on the day.

Joint third place with 6% apiece of the fan vote came the Bahrain Grand Prix, with Leclerc coming out on top in a enthralling duel against Verstappen as the new era of Formula 1 began.

Then alongside Bahrain came the Austrian Grand Prix, with another tight battle between the two title protagonists resulting in Leclerc being in imperious form.

He kept polesitter Verstappen in check in the early stages in Spielberg, before lunging out of the blue at Turn 4 to take the lead, and his varying strategy against the Red Bull ensured he passed the reigning World Champion three times on track in the same race.

Leclerc also had to manage a late throttle issue that threatened to derail his hopes, but he held on gamely to take the win in a thoroughly entertaining grand prix, which took joint third in the official Formula 1 fan poll.
