FP2: Rosberg P1 as the rain buckets down

Date published: July 1 2016

Nico Rosberg claimed back-to-back P1s at the Red Bull Ring on Friday, as the rain bucketed down minutes after he clocked his 1:07.967.

It was a busy start to Friday’s second practice at the Austrian Grand Prix as the drivers ventured out of the pits with a 40 percent chance of rain in the session.

However, on his out-lap Lewis Hamilton reported “spots of rain on the visor” which was shortedly followed by a deluge.

Although it initially appeared as if Rosberg’s 1:07.967, set before the rain fell, would go unchallenged, Hamilton came back in the final minutes on a drying track to close right up on his team-mate.

His 1:07.986 was 0.019s short of the championship leader’s best.

Nico Hulkenberg continued Force India’s good run of form as he finished the session third quickest, putting in a late effort with a 1:08.580.

Sebastian Vettel was fourth fastest, 0.622s off the pace, as he concentrated on race-pace in the final 15 minutes. His session ended in the gravel as he slid off the track.

Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen, who bounced back from his broken suspension that kept him in the garage prior to the rain, were P5 and P7 respectively.

The Red Bull team-mates were split by the Toro Rosso of Carlos Sainz.

Kimi Raikkonen was eighth ahead of Valtteri Bottas and Jenson Button. The McLaren driver was 1.027s off the pace.
