Fry leaves McLaren with immediate effect

Pat Fry believes there is more scope for change under the 2021 freeze than people think.
Pat Fry, the man in charge of designing this year’s McLaren MCL34, is leaving the team with immediate effect.
Fry returned to McLaren in September last year, replacing Matt Morris as engineering director in what was also going to be a short stint as the Woking team awaited the arrival of James Key.
Although McLaren announced Key’s signing last year, they were unable to complete the move as he was still under contract with Toro Rosso who were not keen on relinquishing their star designer.
Key eventually joined McLaren in March this year with Bahrain his first grand prix with the Woking outfit.
His arrival means Fry is now surplus to requirements with the former Benetton, Ferrari and Manor man returning to semi-retirement.
Reports, though, are already linking him to either Renault or Williams, the latter having recently said goodbye to Paddy Lowe.
