Haas boss Guenther Steiner believes there will come a time where his rookie drivers realised they knew very little about Formula 1.

The American team has decided to sacrifice their present in the hope of a better future after deciding not to develop their 2021 car and also bring in not one, but two rookies to replace the vastly experienced duo of Romain Grosjean and Kevin Magnussen.

The team hope that this approach will bring much brighter days to come from 2022 onwards, but for now one of the main focuses is to get both Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin fully integrated into the world of Formula 1 with some crucial experience of their own.

Steiner is hoping somewhere along the process, his drivers will realise they had an awful lot to learn when joining the pinnacle of motorsport.

“There is always room for improvement, as you know with all of us,” said Steiner.

“They are improving and as I always said from the beginning of the year, at some stage, they will actually realise how little they knew in F1 when they started in Bahrain this year.

“I don’t know when that is coming but there is normally a moment when you get to it where you are learning when you are young because for sure, in Bahrain, they thought they knew it all and then races later they think wow, how little did I know.”

“There are surprises that mean the more you learn in the races because you just realise how different it is.

“They have made good progress, there is always room to improve and they have still got a bit of a way to go.

“Both have got a little bit of a disadvantage that they have nobody to…no experience to judge against and it makes their learning tougher but you learn more.”
