Red Bull boss Christian Horner has said Dan Ticktum has a lot more developing to do before he is “anywhere near” a Formula 1 seat.
A storm has been brewing in F3 as Red Bull junior driver Ticktum has seen his World Championship lead slip away and into the hands of Mick Schumacher, who is in red-hot form with five wins in his last six races.
This prompted Ticktum to question Schumacher’s sudden rise to the top before he deleted his accusations on Instagram.
Ticktum has been on shortlist to drive for Toro Rosso next season, but Horner has suggested that is a long way down the line unless Ticktum can work on his flaws.
“He is a character,” Horner told Sky Sports. “He sometimes engages mouth before brain.
“He is a talented driver, but he’s got more development to do before he is anywhere near Formula 1 level.
“He is fast, but he needs to polish off a few rough edges.”
Horner went on to praise Mick Schumacher for his rise up the ranks in F3 this season and thinks Ticktum has no way back to the top with just one round remaining and a 49 point gap to overhaul.
He added: “In Formula 3, Mick Schumacher has been doing a great job and Prema have been particularly dominant in the second half of the season.
“They have obviously got it together and he is the man to beat. It very much looks like he is favourite to win that Championship now.”
