'Nico Hulkenberg and Haas' ambitions didn't align'

Cyril Abitebul believes Nico Hulkenberg’s talks with Haas fell through due to the American team’s lack of ambition.

Dropped by Renault in favour of Esteban Ocon, Hulkenberg is searching for a new job for the 2020 season.

The German was in talks with Haas with many expecting an announcement at the Italian GP.

That, though, didn’t come and weeks later Haas confirmed they would be sticking with Romain Grosjean and Kevin Magnussen in 2020.

Initial speculation suggested that it was Hulkenberg’s salary demands that put an end to the negotiations, however, Renault team boss Abiteboul believes it was more do with ambition – and Haas’ lack thereof.

“First, you need to understand at what stage Nico is in his career,” he told Russian publication Championat.

“And secondly, he is not the kind of person who is ready to just be in Formula 1.

“For him, F1 is ambition, a journey, and not just a place to be.

“For him, the goals that need to be achieved are important — like those that we have at our team.

“He is professional and experienced enough to understand that with Haas he is unlikely to be able to solve such problems.

“I do not want to show any disrespect to Haas, but it is clear that he would hardly have achieved the desired results there.

“I think he has a certain level of ambition.

“I think Nico can be used as an example: he will not settle for those who lack ambition.”
