Jenson Button predicts more feisty Lewis Hamilton, Max Verstappen battle

Seven-time Formula 1 World Champion Lewis Hamilton will return to the sport in 2022 to attempt to win his eighth title, according to his former McLaren team-mate Jenson Button.

Hamilton has not been heard from since losing the World Championship in the final race of the 2021 Formula 1 season to Red Bull’s Max Verstappen last month in Abu Dhabi under controversial circumstances.

Button, who was the only person to interview Hamilton following the race in his role as a pundit for Sky Sports F1 believes that the Mercedes driver will be back to attempt to win a record-breaking eighth Formula 1 World Championship.

The 2009 World Champion told Good Morning Britain that he hopes that Hamilton continues this season but that he does not have any special insight into what the Mercedes driver is currently thinking.

“I haven’t got a clue but I do know I was the only person to interview Lewis after the last race,” Button said.

“But I really do hope he will be racing, I think he will be racing. You know he wants to win that eighth title and be the most decorated Formula 1 driver in F1 history. He will do that, I really do think so.”

Button also acknowledged the fact that it was a controversial end to last season, however, he feels that people should look at what happened over the course of the entire year.

He added: “(It was) a controversial end to the season but I really do think you have to look at the season as a whole.”

Formula 1 is entering a new era in 2022 and Button believes that the sport is in really good shape heading into it.

Button said: “Formula 1 is in an amazing place, two fantastic drivers going at it every weekend and I think everyone is excited about the new season.

“New regulations and it is all about the development of these cars through the year.”

The regulations are not the only difference that fans of the sport will notice this season, as a number of teams including Mercedes have new driver pairings with George Russell joining as Hamilton’s new team-mate.
