Nick Heidfeld has described Lewis Hamilton as the “most talented” but the most complete driver goes to Fernando Alonso.
Heidfeld raced against both during a Formula 1 career which spanned 12 seasons and 183 race starts and thinks they are the stand-out drivers of the sport.
The German-born driver also holds the same opinion as many others in that Alonso was more deserving of winning more World Championship titles than the two he has in his collection.
“I would say the most complete driver is Alonso… probably the most talented is Hamilton but the best overall, in my eye, was Alonso,” Heidfeld told F1’s Beyond the Grid podcast.
“[Alonso] is, for me, definitely the guy I would like to see most back in Formula 1. When he stopped, when he quit [F1, in 2018], I thought then I would like to see him race again because he is, for sure, one of the best.”
“He was world champion, but he would have deserved to be world champion more times.
“It was fantastic to watch him, and as extreme as he was sometimes out of the car, some stories you hear, what he did in the team and how he played certain things, which in the end probably were also not always to his own benefit.
“I did love to race against him. He was probably the driver I enjoyed most racing against on the circuit because he was always fair – well, not always! Most of the time…”
Alonso has been part of sending Formula 1’s rumour mill into overdrive in recent days having been tenuously linked with replacing Sebastian Vettel at Ferrari once the four-time World Champion’s contract expires with the Scuderia at the end of the 2020 season.
The Spaniard has been out of Formula 1 since retiring from the sport in 2018.
