Mercedes Lewis Hamilton has shared an update on his ongoing contract negotiations with the team, as the saga rumbles on.

Hamilton is a free agent at the conclusion of the 2023 F1 season, with his existing deal with Mercedes coming to a close. While he and Mercedes’ boss Toto Wolff previously indicated a desire to get his new deal sorted early in the year, there has still been no confirmation of a new agreement as the summer break hoves into view.

While Hamilton and Wolff have expressed their mutual desire to continue working together, the contract negotiations have taken far longer than those comments may have suggested – but Hamilton says the end is in sight.

Lewis Hamilton: I might end up keeping you waiting!

Speaking to the media ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix, Hamilton was asked about his contract situation and whether an announcement might be expected soon.

“No, it’s very, very close,” he said when asked whether it’s close to being signed or being announced – possibly before the summer break

“It might be announced at the end of the year. I might keep you waiting!

“Honestly, I don’t have any more information for you to share. It’s with the lawyers, it continues to be with the lawyers, back and forth on things.”

Pressed on whether he’s merely an interested observer of the contract negotiations or if he’s directly involved in the process, Hamilton said he had made a conscious decision to take a step back.

“I’ve not been part of it, the whole time,” he said.

“I’ve been removed from it from the beginning. I’ve been wanting to focus on all the other things I have going on.

“The team has been working on it in the background. There’s no negotiation left. It’s just all the small bits.”

Lewis Hamilton hoping for stronger weekend in Hungary

With Mercedes having fallen behind McLaren in the battle behind Red Bull last time out at Silverstone, the change to the much slower and twistier Hungaroring has Hamilton hopeful of a much stronger weekend behind the wheel of the W14.

“I’m definitely hopeful,” he told Sky F1.

“I think the McLaren was much quicker than us at the high speed, but we were quicker at the lower speed. This is mostly low-speed and medium-speed so, hopefully, we will be, at least closer, to the group.

“We’ve been working on the car constantly. It was good for us here last year. So I’m really hoping it’ll be good this weekend.”
