Dogged by reports that he was seriously considering retiring after losing last year’s World title, Lewis Hamilton says “of course” he thinks about quitting Formula 1.

But that’s not because he lost, rather it is because at his age one has to think about the “next steps” in life.

A disappointed Hamilton left the Yas Marina circuit after losing the World title to Max Verstappen in controversial circumstances with a “we’ll see about next year”.

Those were his last words spoken in public, or on social media, for almost two months.

Throughout that time various reports claimed this was it for the 37-year-old, Hamilton said to be giving serious thought to quitting.

When asked about that at the launch of Mercedes’ 2022 car, the W13, he insisted he “never said” he was going to hang up his helmet.

That, though, doesn’t mean he doesn’t give it some thought.

“Naturally at the end of any season for those who are around my age, of course you are thinking about the future,” he said as per GPFans.

“You are thinking about what are the next steps, what are the right steps for you to take, what is right for you in terms of overall happiness.

“I always evaluate all my options but I did make a commitment to the team earlier on in the season.”

Last year Hamilton signed a two-year extension with Mercedes, one that should keep him at the team until the end of the 2023 season.

But that time, if things go to plan, he could have nine Drivers’ Championship titles to his name.

This year the Briton is chasing that record-breaking eighth that slipped from his grasp last season while Mercedes are seeking an unprecedented ninth successive Constructors’ Championship.

“I know I say it so many times but I love working with everyone towards a common goal,” Hamilton said. “I feel like I am at my best so why do I need to leave.

“There are so many ways you can refocus and get recentred and I would say this one was one of the best that I have experienced so I feel the freshest I feel I ever have.”
