Red Bull advisor Dr Helmut Marko has a suspicion that there is currently a lot going on behind the scenes at Mercedes.

The Silver Arrows have been the dominant force in the turbo hybrid era winning six consecutive World Championship doubles since 2014.

But the futures of Mercedes boss, Toto Wolff, drivers Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas, plus the Mercedes team itself have all been placed under intense scrutiny. As it stands, not one has officially confirmed their future beyond the end of this season.

Mercedes’ parent company, Daimler, has recently stated that they do have a “clear intention” to remain in Formula 1 and with Wolff continuing as team boss, but contract extensions have yet to to be announced.

Marko is always one to stay close to the rumour mill and he is hearing a lot of noise from the Silver Arrows, who have also been linked with signing Sebastian Vettel next season.

“Let’s wait and see what developments are going on at Mercedes,” Marko is quoted as having told Osterreich newspaper.

“I hear that a lot is happening there in terms of personnel.”

Even though Wolff has categorically stated that his recent investment into Aston Martin, now majority owned by good friend Lawrence Stroll, is purely a personal one, the rumours of an eventual joint bid by Stroll and Wolff to take charge of the Mercedes team are not going away.

Marko thinks that the works team will still be here next year in form or another.

He added: “If they’re still there, that’s fine. We will want to beat them. If they are not, it will be a different team.”
