Sky F1 pundit Martin Brundle believes there are three options on the table for Red Bull following Honda’s decision to leave F1 after the 2021 season.
Red Bull and sister team AlphaTauri are currently without an engine supplier for the 2022 season and beyond following the Japanese manufacturer’s shock decision to pull the plug on their Formula 1 operation at the end of the 2021 campaign.
In the aftermath of the confirmation, attentions turned to what the future could possibly hold for star driver Max Verstappen and for Red Bull themselves if they are unable to find a solution which keeps them as competitive as possible.
Brundle was asked for his thoughts on the big news from the past week and thinks that leaving Formula 1 will be an option for Red Bull.
And, ahead of shacking up with their former engine partners, Renault, will be a desire to buy the intellectual property from Honda and effectively rebrand their engine.
“It’s a great shame Honda are leaving,” Brundle said on Sky Sports F1.
“They are an engineering-led company, always have been, they have recommitted to IndyCar a week later with a hybrid engine because they think has still got value in it. There are different numbers involved there but it is a still a great shame to lose them.
“I can’t put any positive spin on that news at all.
“I’m assuming that Red Bull’s Plan A is to take the engine over themselves and rebrand it. Plan B would a Renault engine and Plan C will be a exit.”
Sitting alongside Brundle was Nico Rosberg, also on Sky F1 duties this weekend, and he believes Honda’s decision is solely down to the costs involved in producing and developing a Formula 1 engine.
“I suppose the problem is it just costs so much money to develop the engine and stay at the forefront of Formula 1,” Rosberg said.
“And going electric in the car industry now is a big, big trend which is also going to cost huge amounts of money, so it’s really unfortunate for the sport that Honda are leaving.”
