Martin Whitmarsh has one goal in his role as Aston Martin’s F1 chief executive and that’s to see the team “up on the top step of the podium”.

Last October Aston Martin underwent a management reshuffle with former McLaren team boss Whitmarsh returning to Formula 1 seven years after leaving McLaren.

At the time of the announcement, Aston Martin owner Lawrence Stroll spoke of the “crucial objective leading the transformation of Aston Martin into a Formula One World Championship-winning organisation”.

And that, Whitmarsh says, is his one and only goal.

“For me, to see a great brand, Aston Martin, up on the top step of the Formula One podium will be incredibly satisfying,” the 63-year-old told Reuters.

“Frankly that’s why I’m here.”

Unveiling the Aston Martin AMR22 last week, Sebastian Vettel spoke of his expectations for the new season.

With Formula 1 introducing sweeping technical changes, this year’s cars are brand new, potentially opening the door for a team such as Aston Martin to surprise the big boys.

Vettel has called this year a “true test” for the Silverstone team.

“I think this year will be a true test for us and we will see how good we are. Last year, we didn’t show anything because we didn’t focus on bringing any updates,” he said.

“Whereas this year, it’s all about this set of regulations, this generation of cars and we will be able to show what we can produce, and we should be measured based on that.”

Since Whitmarsh’s appointment Aston Martin has signed former BMW Mike Krack as the new team boss, the German replacing Otmar Szafnauer.

Whitmarsh, who has the job title of Group Chief Executive Officer of the new Aston Martin Performance Technologies, says he is still going to be “pretty involved” in the Formula 1 team.

“Formula One is quite an addictive topic, I have to say,” he said.

“So at the moment I’m giving quite a lot of time and energy to that. Therefore I’m going to be pretty involved.

“I think I have a reasonable amount of influence on the success or otherwise of the team in the coming years.”
