Team principal Andreas Seidl enjoyed the moment.
“Together with our colleagues from Renault, we successfully fired up the new car today for the first time,” he said.
“As it is every year, this is an important milestone.
“We have plenty of hard work ahead of us over the coming weeks, but it’s great to see the commitment inside the team and everything going to plan as we continue to prepare for car launch and the first test.”
Testing gets underway at the Circit de Catalunya-Barcelona on 19 February.
Last season McLaren finished best of the rest in the Constructors’ Championship with results that included the team’s first podium in five years.
Carlos Sainz was third at the Brazilian GP.
