Mercedes DTM boss Hubert Haupt has surprisingly said that he hopes Max Verstappen beats Lewis Hamilton to the title.

Verstappen and Hamilton are locked in the sport’s tightest title fight in a long time, with the Red Bull driver 12 points ahead of his Mercedes counterpart with five rounds to go.

Given that he’s the owner of the German team’s DTM outfit, one would think that Haupt would be rooting for Hamilton to secure his eighth title, but that’s not the case.

Instead, he wants to see a new F1 champion crowned in the form of Verstappen, and thinks that he can do it.

“I think it’s time for someone other than Hamilton to become World Champion,” Haupt told Sport1.

“In terms of Formula 1, it would be important for Red Bull to win the title. That’s why I hope Verstappen makes it.

“There are still a few tracks coming up that suit Mercedes, but if Verstappen scores well in the next two races, he’s got such strong nerves, that he can do it.”

Things are indeed looking good for Verstappen heading into the final five rounds. Not only does he have a lead over Hamilton, but he could well have the better car at the next two rounds in Mexico and Brazil if the higher altitudes favour Red Bull as they have in the past.

Despite that though, DTM champion Maximilian Götz is still backing Hamilton to prevail and officially become the most successful driver in F1 history in terms of titles.

He feels the experience the 36-year-old has of title fights and the fact that Verstappen has never been involved in one before will make the difference.

“Lewis is used to dealing with such tight situations, for Verstappen it’s something new,” he said.

“But the two of them are at a top level that’s absolutely world class. Maybe the team will have a say in that.

“I believe that Hamilton will pull it off – because then maybe Verstappen’s nerves will burn out a bit.”

The battle between the two could well go down to the final race of the year, and Toto Wolff thinks that, if the title is on the line in Abu Dhabi, one of Hamilton and Verstappen may crash into the other if it means securing the World Championship.
